What Is PTSD?

As defined by the National Institute of Mental Health, post-traumatic stress disorder is a disorder that may develop in a person after they have experienced a highly traumatic event, including an event that’s shocking, scary, or dangerous in some way. A person who suffers from PTSD may experience:

  • Flashbacks
  • Nightmares
  • Frightening thoughts
  • Avoidance symptoms, such as staying away from a triggering activity or location
  • Feeling tense or on edge
  • Being easy to startle
  • Angry outbursts
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of interest in enjoyable activities
  • Trouble maintaining relationships
  • Memory problems

In some cases, PTSD can lead to depression and a sense of hopelessness about the future. In severe cases, PTSD can lead to behaviors of self-harm.

Common Causes of PTSD

A person may develop PTSD after being involved in a traumatic event. Examples of traumatic events that may lead to PTSD include being involved or witnessing the following:

  • Car accident
  • Bicycle or pedestrian accident
  • Act of war
  • House or apartment fire
  • Death of another person
  • Rape or sexual assault
  • Domestic violence

Please note that the above list is not inclusive; a person may develop PTSD after being exposed to another source of trauma.

What Is PTSD Therapy

Post-traumatic stress disorder therapy seeks to help the patient improve and alleviate their symptoms, learn how to cope with their PTSD by teaching coping techniques, and restore their self-confidence and sense of wellbeing in the world. Usually, the type of therapy that a PTSD therapist will use is cognitive-behavior therapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy will involve talking through the traumatic event and then working with the therapist to develop a new perspective and new thinking patterns around the event and current perception. By changing thinking patterns, a person who is struggling with PTSD may be better equipped to manage their symptoms and emotions.

Sometimes, PTSD therapy may also be paired with medication. It’s important that you speak with your therapist about your expectations for therapy, your goals, and your symptoms and challenges.
