Grief & Loss Counseling

Grief & Loss Counseling

Losing someone or something is a difficult thing for nearly everyone to experience. For some people, however, loss can be extremely traumatic.

Loss of a loved one can be particularly traumatic, especially if it is the result of non-natural causes or a particularly close relationship. In other cases, a serious illness, divorce, or other losses can trigger feelings of grief.

Sometimes coping with grief and loss can feel impossible, limiting, and even disabling, and can prevent you from interacting with others and the world in a normal and healthy way. If you are experiencing serious amounts of grief, our counseling services can help.

What Can I Expect from Grief & Loss Counseling?

Participating in grief and loss counseling can feel intimidating at first. In fact, many people deny that they need counseling to work through their grief, believing that they are either perfectly fine or holding on to the idea that to “move on” would be a betrayal to who or what was lost. It is important to remember that you aren’t working to “move on” but rather to move forward, holding your grief in a healthy place, honoring what was lost.

Some things you can expect from Grief & Loss Counseling include:

  • Identifying and understanding the 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages are not linear and some take a long time to work through.
  • Identifying and understanding the four tasks of grieving: accepting the reality of the loss, experiencing the pain of grief, adjusting to the new normal, and creating an enduring connection to what was lost.
  • Identifying emotions, thinking patterns, and unhealthy behaviors.
  • Learning to adapt to life without what was lost, manage changes to your routine, connect with others, etc.
  • Regain your sense of identity in light of the loss.
  • Learn to honor your feelings and relationship with the past while moving toward the future.

It is important to work through your grief.

Our grief and loss counselors work with people of all ages, individuals, couples, and families. If you feel that your grief is overwhelming, or you feel stuck, we are here to help. Grief and loss can often lead to other complications, including feelings of depression, anxiety, and PTSD in some cases.
