Does EMDR Therapy Actually Work?

March 15, 2025

When it comes to therapy, one of its best qualities is how versatile it can be. Different challenges call for different approaches, and there is a wide range of therapeutic methods that can address specific needs. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one such approach, offering hope and healing to individuals grappling with trauma, anxiety and other deeply rooted emotional struggles.

If you’ve heard about EMDR therapy but aren’t quite sure how it works or if it’s right for you, Life Insight can provide clarity. Our compassionate therapists have seen firsthand just how transformative this therapy can be.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

EMDR therapy stands apart from traditional talk therapy methods. Instead of primarily focusing on verbal processing, EMDR operates through a combination of dialogue, guided focus on disturbing memories and bilateral stimulation. This stimulation is achieved through gentle eye movements, tapping or auditory tones, which aim to help the brain reprocess unresolved memories.

The science behind EMDR is based on the adaptive information processing model. When someone experiences trauma or intense emotional distress, the brain may struggle to process those memories fully. This can leave people feeling stuck—reliving painful experiences through flashbacks, anxiety or other symptoms. EMDR activates the brain’s natural processing abilities to address stored negative emotions and beliefs. Over time, it helps reduce the emotional intensity of those memories and replaces them with more adaptive, positive beliefs.

Think of it as emotional “clean-up” work. Just as your body works to heal a cut or bruise, EMDR aims to restore emotional well-being by allowing the mind to work through and heal deeply rooted pain.

What Happens During an EMDR Session?

People often ask what to expect from an EMDR session, especially if talk therapy hasn’t worked as well for them in the past. EMDR sessions are a bit different in structure and process.

First, your therapist will work with you to identify a specific issue or memory to focus on. This step may include exploring how certain memories or emotions are stored in your mind and body. Once the groundwork is laid, the therapist will guide you in focusing on the memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, like following a moving light or listening to alternating tones. During this process, your brain begins to reorganize and “desensitize” the troubling memory.

It’s worth noting that EMDR can bring up strong emotions during the session. However, most clients find the process not only manageable but also empowering.

The Benefits and Effectiveness of EMDR Therapy

EMDR’s benefits continue to astound both therapists and clients. This evidence-based approach has been shown to be highly effective for reducing symptoms of trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and even conditions like low self-esteem or performance anxiety. Clients often notice significant progress within fewer sessions when using EMDR.

Research backs its efficacy, with organizations like the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization endorsing EMDR as a treatment for trauma. Many clients describe a sense of relief after processing their pain, feeling unburdened by the memories that once held them back.
