What Is Trauma?

As defined by the American Psychological Association (APA), trauma is “an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape, or natural disaster.” Those who have lived in war or conflict zones may be more at risk of trauma, as well as those who have lived through violent events or other major accidents.

When a person has experienced a traumatic event and developed trauma (the emotional response), they may have short- and long-term reactions that include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, withdrawal from relationships, and, sometimes, physical symptoms. Trauma can develop into the more serious condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

Understanding Trauma Therapy

Someone who has lived through a traumatic event may be advised to seek trauma therapy. Trauma therapy is a form of therapy that is designed to help you cope with the emotional responses of trauma after such an event. There are different types of trauma therapy; the therapy that may be recommended and may be most effective for you might depend on the therapist’s personal philosophy, the source of your trauma, your age and the degree of your symptoms, and your goals for therapy. Some therapies that are used to treat trauma and PTSD include:

  • Prolonged exposure therapy, which includes exposing the patient to the source of the fear/trauma.
  • Cognitive processing therapy, which involves challenging one’s perspective and thoughts about the trauma. This is one of the most common types of therapy.
  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy, this is similar to cognitive processing therapy, but is specifically designed for children and teens.
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), which uses bilateral stimulation to release blocked emotions. We offer EMDR therapy at Life Insight.
