What Is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops after a person experiences a traumatic event or witnesses a traumatic event. The symptoms of PTSD take shape in various ways, and no two people may be affected by the disease in the exact same manner. Some of the common symptoms of PTSD include–

  • Recurring and distressing memories of the traumatic event;
  • Nightmares;
  • Flashbacks;
  • Emotional distress and emotional and physical reactions to occurrences that bring back memories of the trauma (for example, being scared to ride in cars following a serious car accident);
  • Avoidance of any activities that may trigger fear or memories of the traumatic event;
  • Anger and other emotional issues;
  • Negative thinking, depression, and feelings of hopelessness;
  • Challenges in maintaining close and intimate relationships;
  • Self-destructive behavior;
  • Difficulting concentrating;
  • Feelings of guilt or shame; and more.

The above list is not inclusive; as stated above, the symptoms of PTSD can present very differently depending on the individual.

Sources of PTSD

Any exposure to a traumatic event could lead to the development of PTSD. Again, there is no finite list of events that could be traumatic. Typically, PTSD is used to describe the mental health conditions of those who have been deployed at war (veterans) or who have lived in high-conflict areas geopolitically, such as war zones, or who have been victims of torture. PTSD could also impact those who have:

  • Been in a car accident;
  • Witnessed a traumatic event, such as a crash or the death of another;
  • Experienced physical or sexual abuse;
  • Experienced abuse as a child;
  • Live through a natural disaster, such as a fire or a flood; and more.
