Sources of Trauma

Psychological trauma is a type of psychological response to a traumatic, highly stressful event. As such, there are many different sources of trauma, and each person’s response to trauma may look entirely unique. With that in mind, some of the most common sources of trauma include:

  • Being present in a war zone, either as a civilian or as a member of the military;
  • Being involved in a severe accident, such as a car accident;
  • Living through a natural disaster;
  • Seeing someone else be severely injured or killed; or
  • Being the victim of a crime or act of violence, such as domestic violence, rape, or sexual assault.

In addition to the above sources of trauma, a person may also suffer psychological trauma as the result of a divorce or parents going through a divorce, from bullying, and from family violence, amongst other things.

Effects of Trauma

Trauma can manifest itself in different ways, including the psychological disorder post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Initial and long-term effects of trauma might include:

  • Exhaustion or fatigue
  • Feelings of numbness
  • Disassociation or confusion
  • Sadness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety and agitation
  • Emotional outbursts, including outbursts of anger
  • Insomnia
  • Self-destructive behavior, including suicide attempts in some cases or thoughts of suicide
  • Being easily frightened or startled
  • Nightmares or flashbacks
  • Feeling physically ill or experience aches and pains

The above list is not inclusive; trauma victims may experience other side effects, both physical and psychological, not listed above.

The Basics of Trauma Counseling

Therapy is one of the best and most effective types of treatment for trauma, and may be used alone or in conjunction with the use of other treatment methods, such as prescription medications, yoga or other exercise, etc. Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is one of the most common types of therapy used to treat trauma. This type of therapy focuses on helping individuals change their current thought patterns and form a new perspective in order to better understand and control their emotions and behaviors.

Trauma counseling can be effective, but it also requires effort. For some individuals, being asked to relive the traumatic event can be painful and extremely difficult; long-term, however, working through trauma can have positive effects and result in an individual feeling more empowered and in control of their thoughts and emotions.
