As any parent of a teen or now grown child will tell you, having a teen is tough work. The teenage years are tough on everyone—a teen may suffer from depression, anxiety, behavioral issues, or another mental health condition, and a parent of a teen may feel helpless and confused about how to best support their teen or when this phase will possibly pass. Reach out to us today to learn more about how we can help.

Types of Issues We Help You and Your Teen Address

There is no shortage of potential mental health and behavioral issues that a teen may be experiencing as they navigate some of the toughest years of their life. At Life Insight, our teen therapists have experience with the following:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Chemical dependency and drug use
  • Alcohol use and abuse
  • Peer pressure
  • Bullying
  • Behavioral issues
  • Academic performance issues
  • Self-harm
  • Gender identity/sexual identity questions
  • Communication
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Eating disorders

For parents, we can also provide therapy that is focused on how you can best support your teen, improve communication, and manage the stress and negative emotions that may be associated with trying to parent during these challenging years.

What Teen Therapy Looks Like

The specific approach that one of our teen therapists may take in working with your child can look different depending on the specific challenge your teen is facing and their goals for therapy. Generally, however, our purpose is to:

  • Help your child identify goals for therapy—We’ll work with your teen to discover what they would like to get out of their therapy sessions and what their goals are. This is one of the most important steps in therapy and can establish the outlook for a positive future early on.
  • Teach coping skills and techniques—Before behaviors and thinking patterns can be changed—remember, no changes are made overnight—it’s important to help a teen develop coping skills that can help them to manage thoughts and behaviors. For example, deep breathing or distraction techniques may be useful.
  • Challenge and change thinking patterns—If your teen is struggling with self-confidence, anxiety, depression, or other mental health disorders, the problem may be rooted in their thinking patterns. Our therapist can work with your child to help them challenge their own ideas about themselves and the world, creating new neural pathways that are healthier.
  • Address sources of trauma—Sometimes, behavioral issues, substance abuse issues, and mental health disorders are rooted in trauma. If this is the case, addressing those sources of trauma will be an important part of your teen’s recovery.
