Why Work with a Hinsdale Couples Counselor?

Working with a couples counselor can feel intimidating and even embarrassing–you may think that there is something wrong with you or your partner and feel shameful about seeking therapy as such. On the contrary, though, running into roadblocks during a relationship is very natural and is to be expected; taking the time to seek counseling and work through your issues shows your commitment to the relationship, improving your own style of conflict management, gaining a new perspective, and your and your partner’s wellbeing.

What to Expect During Couples Counseling

You may feel nervous or unsure about couples therapy; knowing what to expect can help to put your mind at ease. When you go to counseling with your partner, you should expect to:

  • Unearth deep problems. Most couples have the same fight (sometimes with different details) over and over. Or, couples may not fight at all and just bottle up their feelings inside. Getting to the root of what’s going on is key.
  • Acknowledge what you want out of therapy. Your relationship therapist will encourage you and your partner to set some goals related to your counseling and some timelines for meeting those goals.
  • Hear your partner and learn new skills. Therapy is about learning something new, and this can be challenging. You’ll have to work hard to really hear your partner, reflect on your own actions, see things from a new perspective, empathize, and learn new skills for coping, expressing yourself, and managing your own emotions.
  • Work hard. Your therapist will likely give you some homework to do, such as scheduling time to be intimate with your partner or practicing a new skill you learned in therapy. If you want therapy to be effective, it’s important that you do these things!
